I’ve been slowly building out my shop tools, and adding this plasma cutter feels like a genuine upgrade rather than just another gadget. From the moment I unboxed it, it was clear this was designed for people who actually use their tools not just admire them on a shelf.What is impressive to me is how flexible it is. Being able to run it on either 120V or 240V means I can work wherever I am without rearranging my entire setup. It adapts to the power I have available and still delivers clean, confident cuts. On 240V especially, it slices through steel, stainless, aluminum, and copper with surprisingly smooth edges and very little cleanup afterward.The pilot arc feature has already earned its keep. Starts are consistent, and it feels forgiving even when working on less than perfect surfaces, great for repair work, brackets, and patch panels.I also appreciate how modern and practical the controls are. The LED panel makes it easy to dial in settings like pilot arc time and post flow without guessing, and the air pressure reminder is a small touch that makes a big difference in keeping cuts clean and consumables lasting longer. Setup was quick thanks to the pre installed regulator and air fittings, I was cutting metal within minutes.Portability is another important feature. It’s compact enough to move around easily, runs on standard compressed air, and feels efficient rather than wasteful. For ongoing shop projects, repairs, or fabrication work, it strikes a great balance between power and operating cost.Overall, this plasma cutter feels like a tool I’ll reach for often, not just occasionally. I picked up the Lotos Lop55d plasma cutter because my boyfriend recently got a new welder and had been wanting to add a plasma cutter to his setup. He was looking for something capable enough for DIY projects, general shop use, and occasional heavier-duty cutting, but still portable and straightforward to use. When we came across this one by Lotos Optima, it really looked like it checked all the boxes. After spending time using it, it’s proven to be a solid, dependable piece of equipment that does exactly what it’s advertised to do.Right out of the box, the build quality felt reassuring. The unit itself is sturdy and well put together without being overly heavy or awkward to move around. It’s compact enough to easily carry around the shop or load up when needed, which was important to him. The LED control panel is clear and easy to read, and adjusting the settings feels simple and intuitive instead of confusing or overly technical. It definitely feels like a machine meant to be used regularly, not something delicate you have to baby.Performance has been really impressive so far. He’s already used it for cutting steel plate, trimming down brackets, and cleaning up metal for welding prep, and it’s handled all of that without any issues. The non-touch pilot arc makes starting cuts smooth and consistent, even on painted or slightly rusty metal, which has been a huge plus. Cuts are clean and precise, and it has no problem working through thinner material while still having enough power for thicker steel within its rated range. The arc stays stable, and it feels very controllable, even when doing more detailed or curved cuts.Ease of use is another area where this cutter really stands out. It pairs well with his welder, is easy to use, and has already proven itself useful for real projects around the shop. If you’re looking for a plasma cutter that balances power, portability, and ease of use, this one is definitely worth considering. I highly recommend it.

First things first: once I got it set up it cut through some pretty heavy gauge metal without any issues. I still have to dial it in, but I expect that it'll work just fine. The control knobs work smoothly.Plasma cutters are very versatile and you don't really know what you're missing until you've used one.This model sits on the higher and of the budget models and as far as I can tell you get a reasonable value for your money.It takes pretty standard consumables, which it a big plus to me.However, there are some caveats:- For some reason the manufacturer opted for an 8mm tubing connector to the air compressor. It does not come with an adapter to a standard 1/4" NPT or quick connect. Those are less than $5 but, why not include one?- The unit is very small and lightweight and feels a bit cheap. Everything on it seems to be flimsy and fiddly.- The instructions are very incomplete and poorly written.- The Teflon-tape that comes with it is the cheapest and thinnest I've ever seen. I chucked it in the trash and used my own quality tape.

I started using a high end plasma cutter at my Bro-in-law’s fabrication shop almost 10 years ago that cost over $2000 at the time he purchased it. I was amazed at how quickly that thing cut through quarter-inch steel plate. Compared to an Acetylene torch these things cut like a hot knife through butter and eliminated the need for dangerous flammable gases and potential leaky hoses. Ever since I fist used a plasma cutter, I’ve wanted one for my home shop but the cost of one like my Bro-in-law has was way out of reach for my limited shop budget. With advances in technology and increased popularity, plasma cutters are steadily becoming more affordable for home and hobby shop use.This LOTOS Optima Series LOP55D 55A Plasma Cutter is small and compact and nearly the same size as the one I’ve been using at the fabrication shop. And for a small fraction of the price, I’d almost be willing to put them on the same performance level. This one may actually have some advantages with it’s 4T setting and adjustable Post Flow Timing and Pilot Arc Timing which while not mentioned in the manual, may prove extremely useful for using this machine on a CNC plasma table.Setup is extremely easy and straight forward. It came with an air moisture filter and pressure regulator already installed, but the compressed air hose connection is for small push and lock tubing. As I’m using it in a shop where I normally use various air tools I opted for a standard quick connect air tool fitting, which I feel is more reliable than the press in tube style fitting.The only thing about this machine that I didn’t like, and contemplated dropping 1 star off the rating over, was the short length of the power cord. The Cord on my Bro-in-law’s machine was about 15 feet long (if I remember correctly). Which allowed us to move the machine nearly half way across his shop, and between that and the length of the torch hose, we could practically cover the majority of the shop’s work space. This Lotus Plasma cutter came with a short 3ft power cord which limits the range of space which it can be used in while maximizing performance via 220v circuit. I can’t move my 220v Welder outlet and I dislike the idea of using extension cords for things like this.The performance of this machine is excellent and cuts way faster and allows for intricate cuts that can’t be duplicated with cut-off wheels or extremely slow power saws. With this Lotus plasma cutter and the 2 Lotus Mig welders I now have in my shop, I know I’m going to be working on a lot more metal fabrication projects in the future as things will get done a lot faster now. Now all I need to complete my welding tools wish list is an AC/DC Tig welder that I can use for aluminum fabrication with far cleaner welds than a spool gun.
